Serving Together to Bring People to Jesus

A Note of Encouragement

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven (Matthew 5:14-16, ESV).

During part of a mission trip to encourage churches in Montana, I stayed in Helena for two days. The home I stayed in was in the valley outside of the city. As I enjoyed the view toward the city in the evening, I thought of the words of Jesus from the Ser-mon on the Mount. The city was stretched across the side of a mountain providing a beautiful view of the city. The Capitol was easily seen for many miles. Just as I could easily see the lights of Helena, Jesus is saying that our light should shine before others.

When Jesus stated that we should be the "light of the world," He was saying that we should become like Him. Jesus said, "

The purpose for letting our light shine is so others can see the good works that Jesus carries out through our lives. In other words, the light that shines from our lives should be showing others the presence of God in our lives. Then, the ultimate result is that others will give glory to God. We need to remember that letting the light of Jesus shine through our lives is not a suggestion for us to consider. This is a clear command from our Lord, Jesus Christ. Not to let our light shine before others is to live in rebellion to our Lord. I am sure you do not want to be a rebellious follower of Jesus.

I want to encourage you to think of ways to let the light of Jesus shine through your life to others. Let someone see Jesus in you when you go to Wal-Mart or when you are at the mall. Also, let your children see Jesus in you when you help them with their homework. Likewise, your teenagers need to see the light of Jesus shining through you. Yes, I know that is a hard one, but try anyway. I believe you "see the light."
